The University of West London (UWL) is enhancing student life with a cutting-edge indoor navigation system, dramatically transforming how students navigate their campus. This initiative reflects UWL’s dedication to creating a superior environment for its community, including students, staff, and visitors.
Pioneering Student Support
Established in 1860, UWL has grown into a prominent educational institution, serving around 19,000 students across five campuses. The university is renowned for its commitment to student satisfaction and support, having been named University of the Year for Student Experience by The Sunday Times Good University Guide on two occasions. UWL continually strives to refine and elevate the student experience, with campus navigation being a key focus.
Tackling Navigation Challenges
Students have often faced difficulties navigating the campus, especially those with mobility needs who require unhindered access to all university facilities. To address these issues, UWL has sought a solution that would facilitate easy and efficient navigation.
Innovative Navigation Solution
In response, UWL has incorporated MazeMap’s cutting-edge wayfinding technology into their newly launched Student App. This integration enables students to access real-time, interactive maps linked directly to their timetables, simplifying their navigation experience. MazeMap’s system is designed to enhance accessibility, allowing all students to navigate the campus independently and with confidence.
The system features adaptable map views specific to UWL, which automatically switch between day and night modes. Since some campus areas are accessible 24/7 while others close at night, MazeMap’s automatic view adjustment ensures that students always have the most relevant information available on their Student App, regardless of the time of day.
Efficient Implementation
The deployment of MazeMap’s system was completed in just four weeks, utilising existing CAD files and infrastructure. This swift implementation ensures that all students now benefit from the improved navigation service, significantly enhancing their campus experience. The rapid deployment highlights UWL’s commitment to providing prompt and effective solutions for its students.
Adrian Ellison, Pro Vice Chancellor (People and Digital) at UWL, remarked: “In developing our new Student App, we consulted with students to identify their priorities. The predominant request was for an easy way to find classrooms quickly, especially at the start of the term. Collaborating with MazeMap has enabled us to deliver advanced wayfinding technology, allowing students to navigate the campus effortlessly using their smartphones, with step-by-step guidance throughout our buildings.”
Commitment to Ongoing Innovation
UWL remains dedicated to continuous innovation and improvement. Future initiatives include further enhancements to the student experience through advanced technologies, streamlined processes, and comprehensive policies. These efforts aim to provide greater support for students and ensure the campus remains accessible, user-friendly, and conducive to a positive academic and social environment.
The University of West London is leading the way in integrating technology to improve student life. By implementing MazeMap’s state-of-the-art navigation solutions, UWL is setting a new standard for campus navigation and significantly enhancing the overall student experience.
