In recognition of Remembrance Sunday, PTSD Resolution, a charity committed to offering free trauma therapy to veterans, reservists, and their families, is rolling out a new series of Trauma Awareness Training for Employers (TATE) workshops. These workshops, designed specifically for the security industry, have been introduced with the support of the Assist Security Group (ASG), which is the first to join the programme.
Collaborating for a Stronger Industry Response to Mental Health
Through strategic partnerships with organisations such as ASIS UK, the Security Institute, the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals, and the City Security Council, PTSD Resolution seeks to address the mental health challenges faced by veterans working within the security sector. The charity has successfully provided therapeutic services to over 4,000 veterans across the UK, supported by a network of 200 qualified therapists.
The Need for Mental Health Support in the Security Sector
Colonel Tony Gauvain (Retired), Chairman of PTSD Resolution, explained why mental health support is crucial for those in the security industry: “Security professionals, especially veterans, are often exposed to traumatic, high-pressure environments that can lead to long-lasting psychological effects. Our TATE workshops equip organisations with the necessary tools to detect and manage trauma at an early stage, fostering a healthier workplace and boosting operational efficiency.”
Alarming PTSD Rates Among Security Professionals
A 2020 study by the University of Portsmouth revealed that 40% of security officers experience symptoms associated with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This staggering statistic emphasises the critical need for trauma awareness and intervention in the security industry, particularly among those who serve in high-stress roles.
Rising Incidents of Violence and Theft in Retail Settings
The British Retail Consortium (BRC) reported a concerning increase in violence and theft across retail locations, with 1,300 incidents occurring each day during 2022/2023 — nearly a 50% increase compared to the previous year. This sharp rise highlights the growing importance of trauma support for security officers in such environments.
TATE Workshops: A Comprehensive Approach to Employee Wellbeing
TATE workshops, available both in-person and online, range from two-hour interactive sessions to full-day training courses. The goal is to assist managers and HR staff in identifying trauma symptoms, understanding its impact, and creating workplace strategies to foster resilience and provide appropriate support for affected employees.
ASG’s Commitment to Mental Health and Operational Excellence
Troy Hewitt, CEO of ASG, expressed his company’s enthusiasm for the programme: “We recognise the vital role of mental health in our business operations. By participating in TATE, we’re reinforcing our commitment to employee wellbeing. This training will help us provide better support to our team members and clients across various sectors, including luxury retail, hospitality, and healthcare settings.”
Expert Advice for Employers Supporting Security Personnel
Malcolm Hanson, Clinical Director at PTSD Resolution, offered practical guidance for employers on how to support staff experiencing trauma:
- Identify Trauma Symptoms: Employers should be vigilant for any changes in behaviour following a traumatic event, which may indicate the need for professional support.
- Foster Open Communication: Create a company culture that encourages open discussions about stress, ensuring employees feel comfortable talking about their experiences.
- Provide Timely Intervention: If an employee seems to be struggling to return to normal after a traumatic incident, initiate a supportive conversation and offer assistance.
- Seek Professional Help: Build relationships with organisations like PTSD Resolution, who can offer targeted interventions to help employees recover and return to work.
Hanson highlighted that the cost of providing mental health support is far less than the expense of dealing with long-term employee absenteeism or the risks associated with an employee working while suffering from trauma.
Big Give Week: Doubling Donations for PTSD Resolution
During the Big Give Week, from December 3rd to 10th, 2024, all donations made to PTSD Resolution will be matched, doubling the impact of contributions. To learn more about how to support the charity’s work in assisting veterans, visit their website for further information.
