Recognition for Pioneering Circular Recycling Technology
SK chemicals (CEO & President: Ahn Jae-hyun) has earned global acclaim for its groundbreaking innovations, securing the Gold Medal in the video category at the prestigious 2024 International Business Awards (IBA). The company’s award-winning video, titled “SK chemicals Closed Loop Solution in 2024 Chinaplas”, spotlights its advanced circular recycling technology and its commitment to addressing plastic waste challenges through innovation.
About the International Business Awards
Known as the “Stevie Awards,” the IBA is the only global competition in the business sector that evaluates companies and organisations across 15 diverse categories, including management practices, corporate growth, and promotional activities. Since its inception in 2003, the Stevie Awards have recognised excellence in business achievements, with winners selected by an international panel of judges.
This year’s competition drew more than 3,600 entries from 62 countries, representing organisations of all sizes and industries. SK chemicals’ success in securing the top accolade in the technology segment of the video category highlights the company’s leadership in innovation and sustainability.
Revolutionary Circular Recycling Process
The celebrated video, unveiled at Chinaplas 2024 in Shanghai, offers an engaging visual narrative of SK chemicals’ proprietary circular recycling technology. It highlights the step-by-step process of transforming discarded plastics into high-quality materials through collection, crushing, washing, depolymerisation, and polymerisation. These materials are then repurposed into products such as home appliances, food and beverage containers, and textiles.
What sets this technology apart is its reliance on depolymerisation, a process that overcomes the limitations of conventional physical recycling. Unlike traditional methods, which are limited to clean and transparent PET plastics, SK chemicals’ technology can restore coloured PET, films, and fibres to their original quality, offering unparalleled versatility in recycling.
The video also introduces a forward-thinking Closed-Loop system, where used automotive parts, home appliances, and clothing can be recycled back into raw materials to create entirely new products. This approach not only reduces plastic waste but also contributes to building a sustainable circular economy.
Global Recognition for Innovation
The quality and clarity of the video earned high praise from the IBA judges. One judge remarked, “The animation effectively conveys SK chemicals’ innovative circular recycling solution and clearly outlines its vision to scale the recycling business globally.”
Educating and Engaging Stakeholders
Kim Hyoun-dong, Head of Communications at SK chemicals, noted that the video was designed to simplify the complexities of circular recycling for a broader audience:
“Our goal was to present the importance of circular recycling technology in a way that informs and inspires. By doing so, we hope to engage customers, businesses, and other stakeholders in collective efforts to address the growing plastic waste crisis.”
Pioneering a Sustainable Future
This recognition reinforces SK chemicals’ role as a leader in sustainability. By investing in advanced recycling technologies and raising awareness about plastic-related challenges, the company is making significant strides toward building a greener, more sustainable future. SK chemicals continues to focus on expanding its recycling initiatives to foster collaboration among industries, governments, and consumers in reducing the environmental impact of plastic waste.
