Innovative Solution Enhances Forest Fire Prevention and Emergency Response
Huawei, in collaboration with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and start-up PROBOTEK, has announced the successful testing of a groundbreaking wildfire detection system in Greece. This advanced solution, part of Huawei’s TECH4ALL initiative, aims to revolutionize forest fire management by enabling rapid response and minimizing damage.
Successful Testing of Real-Time Detection System
The real-time wildfire detection system was tested using a controlled smoke and fire simulation at NKUA’s forested site in Athens. This test demonstrated the system’s capability to detect and manage fires quickly, allowing emergency services to respond within a crucial 15-minute window. This rapid response is critical for controlling fire risks effectively.
Ren Fujun, CEO of Huawei’s Southeast European Region, highlighted the company’s dedication to technological innovation for environmental and public safety. “Over the last two decades, Huawei has brought advanced technologies to Greece, driven by a commitment to harness innovation for safeguarding the environment, preserving biodiversity, and enhancing the protection of people and their assets,” said Fujun.

Advanced Features of the New System
The wildfire detection system integrates AI technology with Huawei’s 5G network to deliver real-time data analysis. Sensors placed throughout the forest detect environmental factors such as CO2 levels, temperature, and wind speed. When smoke or fire is detected, the system deploys an automated drone equipped with video capture capabilities to the site. This setup allows for immediate data collection and analysis.
The AI-driven command center processes the video footage and sensor data to provide detailed information, including:
- The projected path of the fire and the area it may cover
- The estimated time required for the fire to reach populated areas
- Identification of high-risk zones and evacuation needs
- Recommendations for evacuation routes
Enhanced System Capabilities and Upgrades
The recent test extends the functionality of the initial system, which was introduced in 2022 and focused primarily on fire detection through drones. The upgraded system now includes fire spread analysis, evacuation planning, and route optimization for emergency services. Additionally, the system can estimate the number of people affected by the fire and send personalized notifications to residents via a mobile app. These notifications provide tailored evacuation instructions based on local civil protection plans.
Demonstration and Future Impact
A demonstration of the system’s capabilities is featured in the third episode of Discovery’s documentary series “Being Digi-Sapiens,” titled “Connecting with Nature.” The episode showcases the system’s precision and efficiency, including how sensors are activated and drones are deployed.
The comprehensive wildfire detection and management system developed by Huawei, NKUA, and PROBOTEK represents a significant advancement in disaster response technology. By enabling faster and more effective responses to wildfire incidents, the system aims to save lives and mitigate the extensive damage caused by wildfires.
