As we enter Black History Month 2024, Leila Thomas, CEO and Founder of Urban Synergy, shares her heartfelt connection to this year’s theme of reclaiming narratives. She expresses, “This theme highlights a profound reality: the stories we share about our history influence how we perceive ourselves and our roles in society.”
Shifting the Narrative
The diverse and rich history of Black individuals often gets overshadowed by a narrow portrayal. Urban Synergy’s latest social media campaign aims to highlight fresh narratives and significant moments from role models within the community, urging everyone to find inspiration in their stories. “It’s time to tell new stories that connect us to our heritage while empowering the next generation of Black leaders to forge their paths,” Leila adds.
Honouring Legacy and Sacrifice
Leila’s commitment to this theme was reinforced during a poignant event in Ypres, Belgium, where she participated in a pilgrimage organised by the British West India Regiments Heritage Trust (BWIRHT). This event commemorated the courageous contributions of the West Indian soldiers who fought valiantly in World War I, many of whom did not return home.
Standing alongside Lewisham Mayor Brenda Dacres at the memorial, Leila felt a profound sense of connection to history. “This experience reminded me of the sacrifices made by these soldiers—not just for their freedom, but for a legacy that we are tasked to reclaim and share with future generations.”
The Importance of Authentic Role Models
Reflecting on the significance of Black History Month, Leila underscores the need for authentic heroes in today’s youth culture. “Our young people need more than the celebrities and athletes showcased in the media; they require real role models, individuals who advocate for something larger than themselves.” These veterans embody resilience and dedication to a cause that transcends personal gain.
Inspiring Future Generations
Urban Synergy is focused on fostering new narratives that empower young people to thrive, particularly in fields where they have been historically underrepresented, such as STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and STEAM (which incorporates the arts).
A standout success from their initiatives is Angel, an inspiring 18-year-old software engineer based in Canary Wharf. “Angel’s journey is an incredible testament to what can happen when young people receive the right guidance. Through our mentoring programme, she has been able to overcome barriers that often hinder young Black girls pursuing careers in technology,” Leila explains.
Recognising Everyday Heroes
Angel embodies not only success but also the inspiration she provides to other young individuals, particularly Black girls who may find it challenging to envision themselves in technology careers. Her story exemplifies that with adequate support and opportunities, young people can break through any obstacles they encounter.”
Leila asserts that true growth occurs when young individuals start to notice the everyday heroes surrounding them—like Angel and the veterans from the BWIR who made significant sacrifices for a future they would never witness.
Connecting to Our Heritage
“The connection to our ancestors and their stories is essential. It grounds us and instils pride in our heritage. This Black History Month, let’s remind our youth that they belong to a lineage filled with courage, resilience, and brilliance. This understanding empowers them to rise above stereotypes and societal limitations.”
A Collective Call to Action
Leila encourages everyone to celebrate the hard work of young individuals striving to succeed, the mentors guiding them, and the ancestors who laid the groundwork for their futures. “We shouldn’t wait for history books to acknowledge their contributions; we must start sharing their stories today.”
Fostering a Sense of Community
Urban Synergy is proud to play a pivotal role in reclaiming these narratives, nurturing intergenerational connections, and helping young people recognise that they are part of something much larger than themselves. “We champion the power of mentorship, community, and our shared history to inspire future generations.”
Building a Brighter Future Together
As we move forward, let’s make sure that the upcoming generation of Black leaders values not just the well-known figures but also the unsung heroes who contributed to shaping the world they live in. By doing so, we can cultivate a future that mirrors the richness and depth of our past.
‘Thank you to all the role models who inspire our youth and are featured in our Black History Month campaign. We welcome you to be part of this significant journey.’
