Liverpool Art Exhibition Highlights
Historic and Contemporary Art
This unique exhibition combines The Athenaeum’s extensive private collection with contemporary art from local talents. It aims to spotlight significant historical works by renowned artists James Brierley (1783–1814) and William Gawin Herdman (1805–1882), whose contributions have been pivotal in documenting Liverpool’s dynamic landscape and cultural heritage.
James Brierley, a distinguished portraitist and landscape painter of the early 19th century, is known for his evocative depictions of Liverpool’s early cityscape. William Gawin Herdman, celebrated for his detailed portrayals of the city’s transformation, offers a window into the historical changes that shaped Liverpool. Both artists’ works, carefully safeguarded within The Athenaeum’s private collection, have seldom been shown to the public—until now. This exhibition provides a rare opportunity for visitors to engage with Liverpool’s artistic history through these esteemed figures.
A Dialogue Between Past and Present
This exhibition represents a significant cultural moment for Liverpool,” said Brenda Monahan, Director at Smithdown Social Arts Hub. By pairing the works of Brierley and Herdman with pieces from contemporary local artists, we create a dialogue between historical and modern art, showcasing Liverpool’s continuous cultural evolution. It’s an exciting opportunity for art enthusiasts and historians to explore the depth of the city’s artistic legacy.
Roger Phillips, Chair of The Athenaeum, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration: “We are delighted to share these historically significant artworks with the public. By pairing them with contemporary pieces, we offer a comprehensive view of Liverpool’s artistic journey. This partnership with Smithdown Social Arts Hub not only enhances our commitment to showcasing heritage but also provides a platform for engaging with Liverpool’s vibrant art scene.”
