The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) has released its 2024 Child Drowning Update, revealing that in the last four years, an average of one child per month has drowned at home in England. This alarming statistic is part of a wider trend, with child drowning fatalities doubling since 2019-20, according to data from the National Child Mortality Database (NCMD).
Heartbreaking Statistics
Matt Croxall, RLSS UK Charity Director, expressed deep concern over the findings: “It’s devastating to see that one child each month is losing their life to drowning at home. Our latest report aims to uncover the reasons behind these tragic incidents, so we can work towards helping more families understand the risks and keep their children safe.” The statistics reveal a pressing need for increased awareness and preventive measures among parents and caregivers.
Bath Time Risks
The report indicates that two-thirds of home drownings occurred in the bath, with most of the victims being under the age of five. Matt continued: “In 86% of these cases, the child was unsupervised at the time of the drowning. Some parents had left the room for just a moment, which shows how quickly and silently drowning can occur – often within minutes.” These insights highlight the critical importance of vigilance during bath time, where even a brief lapse in supervision can lead to devastating consequences.
Addressing Misconceptions
RLSS UK is also working to address misconceptions held by many parents. A survey conducted by the charity found that 55% of parents wrongly believe they would hear a lot of noise if their child were in danger of drowning in the bath. This misconception can create a false sense of security and increase the risk of drowning incidents.
Additionally, the survey revealed that 59% of parents with children under five had left the bathroom at least once in the past month while their child was in the bath, often due to forgetting something like a towel. Matt added: “We strongly advise parents and carers to always stay within arm’s reach of young children in water. If you step out of the bathroom, it’s essential to bring your child along.
Launching the Splash Safety at your Pad Campaign
In response to these worrying statistics, RLSS UK is launching a new campaign, Splash Safety at your Pad, running from 1st to 31st October 2024. The campaign aims to raise awareness among parents and caregivers of the importance of water safety at home, particularly during bathtime. As a leading authority in water safety, RLSS UK will offer helpful tips to ensure families can enjoy water safely.
Matt said: “We’re excited to introduce our Splash Safety at your Pad campaign. It’s designed to spread important water safety messages in a fun and engaging way. We hope this initiative will make a positive impact on families, ensuring safer bathtimes for children across the UK and Ireland.”
Engaging Families in Water Safety
The campaign will include educational materials, social media engagement, and community outreach efforts aimed at encouraging parents to adopt safer practices during bath time. By focusing on practical advice and real-life stories, RLSS UK hopes to foster a culture of safety around water for families with young children.
The Splash Safety at your Pad campaign launches on Tuesday, 1st October, with updates available on RLSS UK’s social media channels. Through this initiative, the charity aims to empower families with the knowledge and tools they need to prevent drowning incidents and create a safer environment for their children.
