Pioneering Open RAN and 5G Standalone Integration
Ericsson and MasOrange, Spain’s leading communications service provider, have joined forces in a landmark five-year partnership that will revolutionise Europe’s telecommunications sector. This initiative will position MasOrange at the forefront of open and programmable networks, showcasing the next generation of connectivity through innovative and sustainable solutions.
The partnership involves Ericsson integrating Orange Spain’s and MASMOVIL’s networks into a consolidated Open RAN-ready infrastructure. By leveraging high-performance and energy-efficient network solutions, the collaboration will enhance operational flexibility, scalability, and innovation, enabling a dynamic approach to service delivery.
Open RAN and 5G Standalone: The Future of Connectivity
Launching in October 2024, the project will run alongside Ericsson’s deployment of 5G Standalone (5G SA) technology in rural areas of Spain. Together, these initiatives will deliver one of Europe’s most extensive 5G SA networks, bringing faster, more reliable mobile services to customers nationwide.
Meinrad Spenger, CEO of MasOrange, highlighted the significance of this collaboration: “This partnership with Ericsson represents a decisive moment for MasOrange, Spain, and Europe. By championing Open RAN and programmable mobile networks, we are paving the way for groundbreaking technological advancements and sustainable growth across the telecommunications industry.”
Transforming Network Capabilities
Ericsson will provide its latest Radio System products and Core solutions, including energy-efficient technologies such as Massive MIMO antenna-integrated radios and RAN Compute systems. These state-of-the-art solutions, compatible with Open RAN, will significantly enhance network capacity and reduce operational costs.
Massive MIMO Time Division Duplex (TDD) technology, a cornerstone of this project, uses multiple antenna elements to transmit and receive data simultaneously. This breakthrough improves network efficiency, boosts data speeds, and enhances the user experience, particularly for MasOrange’s growing base of 5G customers.
Meeting Growing Demand with Enhanced Coverage
The collaboration will include network optimisation and densification efforts to improve coverage and capacity in both urban and rural areas. By deploying additional nodes and sites, MasOrange will address the increasing demand for seamless 5G services, particularly in high-traffic environments such as stadiums and event venues.
Jenny Lindqvist, Senior Vice President at Ericsson, stated: “This partnership reflects our vision for open and programmable networks that drive digital transformation across industries and society. Together with MasOrange, we aim to foster rapid innovation, ensuring a future of high-performance networks that enable growth and progress.”
A Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation
Sustainability is a key focus of the partnership. Ericsson’s energy-efficient technologies will allow MasOrange to expand its network while minimising environmental impact. This shared commitment underscores the importance of balancing technological advancement with responsible practices.
Redefining the Telecommunications Landscape
With this ambitious project, MasOrange and Ericsson are setting a benchmark for telecommunications innovation in Europe. By championing Open RAN and 5G Standalone technology, they are unlocking new opportunities for development, transforming the industry, and ensuring a more connected future.
